1998 TOYOTA SUPRA DELIVERS PERFORMANCE IN STYLE
The Toyota Supra offers a bold mix of world-class performance, outrageous styling and luxurious comfort unmatched by any other vehicle in its class. Engine modifications for normally aspirated models highlight the 1998 Supra line. In response to ever-increasing emission requirements, and for the first time in a Toyota-nameplate vehicle in the U.S., all normally aspirated models are fitted with Toyota's Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (WT-i). Designed to enhance engine performance while improving fuel economy and vehicle emissions, WT-i employs continuously variable intake valve timing control to provide greater engine performance, better fuel economy and reduced emissions over a broad rpm range. Fitted with WT-i, Supra's 3.0-liter, 24-valve, inline six-cylinder engine produces 225 horsepower at 6,000 rpm, an increase of five horsepower over the previous year's model (and up 200 rpm from last year). Torque is increased as well, to 220 lb.lft. at 4,000 rpm, an increase of 10 (and occurring 800 rpm sooner than last year's model). Normally aspirated 1998 Supras are available only with a four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission.
SUPRA TURBO - Buy The Supra Here
Supra Turbo models utilize fixed valve timing and twin sequential turbochargers to produce 320 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 315 lb./ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm. During low-rpm operation, only one turbo operates while using less exhaust energy to improve response and torque when accelerating. In the middle rpm range, the second turbo comes to idle speed at a pre-set exhaust pressure for a smooth transition from the primary to the secondary turbo. Both turbos operate at full boost in the high rpm range. Supra Turbo is available with a choice of transmissions: either a four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with manual-shift mode or a six-speed manual. The automatic has an integrated manual shift mode and can be used as a clutchless manual providing faster shift times than in its fully automatic setting. The manual transmission is available only in those states that do not require California emissions.
STANDARD FEATURES - Buy The Supra Here
Supra combines its impressive power with responsive steering and suspension. A limited slip differential is standard on all models in 1998, ensuring that wheel slippage is minimized under all driving conditions. Turbo models are fitted with a Torsen torque-sensing limited-slip differential, while normally aspirated models use a conventional clutch-pack type. Turbo models also feature an on/off traction control system with an integrated "snow" mode. Vehicle-speed sensing power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering allows Supra to be responsive to driver controls at high speeds while remaining easy to park in town. A double-wishbone four-wheel independent suspension ensures a smooth ride and accurate vehicle control. On Turbo models, the suspension is tuned to take advantage of the vehicle's performance potential, without sacrificing a comfortable ride. Brakes are four-wheel disc on all models. A four-channel, four-sensor (threesensor on normally aspirated models) anti-lock brake system with lateral g-sensor also is standard. Passive safety features include dual SRS airbags, side-door impact beams, three-point front and rear seat belts with an ALR/ELR feature in the front passenger and rear positions, and a high-performance head lamp system with integrated fog lamps. Supra is as exciting to look at as it is fun to drive. A rear spoiler is standard on all Sport Roof models. Color-keyed bumpers, dual color-keyed power-operated outside mirrors and green solar energy-absorbing glass also are standard on all models. Non-turbo models come equipped with 225/50R16 92V tires on the front and 245/45R16 94V on the rear. Turbo models feature 235/45ZR17 performance fires on the front and 255/40ZR17 on the rear.
